New: A Travel Alphabet Book

I’m thrilled to announce that my newest project, A Travel Alphabet book, is now available for digital download!

This was a special project for me, not only because it combines my love for travel and art (and bright colors), but also because of the whirlwind creative process that brought it to life.

Back in 2017, I spent a few days in Glasgow before setting off on a solo road trip around Scotland. Though brief, that visit left a lasting impression—especially the rich artistic heritage of city and The Glasgow School of Art (GSA). Fast forward to 2024, I had taken myself myself back in Glasgow for 3 weeks of art classes during my creative sabbatical.

My last course there was Fiction & Picture Book Illustration, taught by Christine Novosel. The first two days of class included practice making collage, using ink with brushes, and learning about calligraphy & typography.

One of the assignments Christine then suggested was to create an alphabet book. Given my recent experience with Alphabet of Fun Facts, I thought it would be a good challenge to make another alphabet book — as quickly as possible and with a simple, handmade approach (vs the digital illustrations & researched fun facts information that I focused on for my first alphabet book).

Because I’ve visited over 55 countries and love exploring different places — and because I increasingly think about what it means to be a good traveler, I decided on travel as a theme. Plus, it’s great for illustrations & a fun topic for most people.

I brainstormed a list of travel-related words (with some help from my sister and ChatGPT). Using the bright blue ink we experimented with in class, I painted illustrations and collaged them onto pink sugar paper, which I had folded into the classic 16-page book format. I also collaged the text to easily rearrange it and experiment with layouts. (This approach also made it easy to fix any mistakes vs writing directly on the primary paper!)

After only ~12 hours of work over two days, the book was complete! I scanned and formatted it into a digital version, and now I’m excited to share it with you. If you’re interested in a unique, handmade travel book filled with tips and vibrant illustrations, A Travel Alphabet is now available to download!
