Each piece in this collection is a unique exploration of form and technique, inspired by a small ballerina sculpture during a Portfolio Preparation class at the Glasgow School of Art.

The creative journey began with short, timed continuous line drawings, evolving into a diverse range of artistic expressions over the course of the class. The instructor, Liz Gray, guided us through multiple methods to represent the ballerina, ensuring that each artwork reflects a distinct approach:

  • Continuous Line Drawings: Fluid, unbroken lines that capture the essence of an object

  • Blind Contour Drawings: A raw representation created without looking at the page while working

  • Dual Line Drawings: Using two drawing implements simultaneously

  • Press & Tickle: A technique combining light and dark lines with tonal shading for depth: tickle = draw light lines; tone = add shading; press = add dark lines

  • Text-Based Imagery: Where words themselves form lines and shapes, blending text with visuals

  • Collage: A mixed media approach using magazine clippings to create dynamic compositions

  • Silhouettes and Cutouts: Striking representations using both solid shapes and negative space

  • Rubbings: Textural works created by rubbing over a 3D version of the ballerina crafted from artist's tape

  • Ink Drawings: Expressive pieces using India ink and a brush, some with water for variable opacity

  • Paintings: A vibrant exploration of color, layering, and form in acrylic

These studies convey the elegance and poise of a ballerina through the lens of an evolving artist. Each piece reflects the progression of core drawing skills and creative processes that were central to the class experience.
