This Japanese Calligraphy Zine is more than just a comic — it's a mini journey into the heart of Kyoto’s rich cultural heritage. I learned from Chikako through a VAWAA calligraphy workshop, where Chikako sensei, an artist born into a family of calligraphers, shares her deep knowledge and playful style.
My zine attempts to capture the essence of her teaching & artistry and an art form that is both serene and vibrant.
The comic was inked on tracing paper referencing my digital illustrations, with authentic calligraphy added (though I used a Pentel brush pen for this vs the traditional calligraphy brush and ink, due to both availability and scale).
Format: Digital download — enjoy handmade elements with digital convenience, including references to traditional tools and techniques
The comic itself is black and white, though I left in the koi washi tape that I used to hold the tracing papers together since it added a pop of color and another element of Japanese culture
Content: A unique mix of illustrations and insights from a calligraphy workshop in Kyoto, plus two pages explaining & showing the creation process during the Graphic Memoir workshop at the Center for Cartoon Studies
Ideal for art lovers, calligraphy enthusiasts, zine collectors, and anyone with a passion for Japanese culture.
